Mountains of the Moon Gift Certificate Giveaway

Mountains of the Moon is a Chicago-based sustainable fashion line created by designer Melissa Baswell, and actualized through a combination of eco-friendly materials, local sweatshop-free labor, and a refined design element that surpasses short-lived fads without sacrificing style.  From start to finish, their garments are designed, patterned, manufactured, dyed and tagged (using eco-friendly materials) in the USA in small, 100% sweatshop-free facilities that are family owned and operated. They choose to use eco-friendly materials like organic cotton, hemp, and tencel that are known for quality, durability and luxurious texture. They opt to create pieces that are fashion-forward but also timeless: Designs that are stylish but that can also be worn for multiple seasons and rise above trends are less likely to end up in landfills.
About the Designer!
At the age of five, designer Melissa Baswell started creating clothing for her dolls using a needle, thread, and reused fabrics. In high school, she was the president of her school’s Ecology Preservation Club, and wore her own handmade clothing created from recycled and organic fabrics. While a student at University of Wisconsin-Madison, Baswell divided her free time between interning with WISPIRG’s Environmental Education Department and recycling thrift store clothing into “renewed” garments on a hand-me-down sewing machine. Well before the green movement became popular, she was using organic cotton and hemp fabrics and dying with low-impact dyes in an effort to create fashion-forward clothing that would break the stereotype of eco-fashion being defined as bland, crunchy, or boring.
Today, Baswell’s work can be found at boutiques worldwide, and has been featured in Boho Magazine, TreeHugger.com, Women’s Wear Daily, Second City Style, Little Designer Book, Runway to Retail, EcoSalon, Eco-Chic Weekly, Style Hive and many others. Her company Mountains of the Moon Eco.Fashion was chosen as one of Green America's ten Green Business of the Year nominees the last three years in a row, and a dress she designed from recycled candy wrappers was recently exhibited at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art.
A regular speaker at green events, Baswell educates audiences on how to easily create green wardrobes without sacrificing style. In addition to designing, Baswell works with several bands and events in the music industry as a stylist, sustainable merchandise designer, and eco-fashion show producer, with clients that include Umphrey's McGee, the Dead, moe., SCI Fidelity Records, Rothbury Festival, Consider it Dan Events, and Los Tortugas Festival.

In an effort to remain true to Melissa's original goals, Mountains of the Moon also makes regular donations, both monetary and in clothing, to several organizations, including American Forests, Oxfam, Carbon Fund, the International Tibet Independence Movement, Conscious Alliance, the Red Door Animal Shelter, and others.Mountains of the Moon represents more than just a clothing line. They represent the blending of fine art, style, ethics, environmental and social responsibility and awareness. They see themselves as collaborators with their customers in an effort to take a stand in making environmentally and socially responsible decisions through their wardrobes.  Melissa's goal for the company and her customers is to work together to express ourselves through fashion and art while making a profound collective difference in the state of the world.
Wearing original artwork on your chest can make you feel inspired, empowered and uplifted. Most of all, it can do the same for the rest of the world (or at least for those who see you wearing it!). From comfortable t-shirts to chic girly tops to warm hoodies to colorful kids items, this line has everything you need to promote eco-conscious living, just by wearing your clothes. Mountains of the Moon t-shirts, hoodies, and child/baby designs include sustainable fabrics like organic cotton and hemp, and are either made in sweatshop-free conditions, either in the USA or imported via fair trade.
